Heather Watson in race to recover for Aussie Open

An elbow injury is threatening Heather Watson’s participation in the Australian Open, which starts a week on Monday.

The British No1 has pulled out of next week’s Hobart International after hurting herself during a second-round defeat to Kiki Bertens in the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Watson tweeted this morning: “I injured my elbow yesterday in my singles match, unfortunately I have to withdraw from Hobart. Doing everything I can to get healthy.”

Despite her injury, Watson went on to play doubles with New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic yesterday but she suffered another defeat, losing 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 to Zimbabwe’s Cara Black and Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova.
