Major joy for Mark Wiebe

29 July 2013

Mark Wiebe made light work of Bernhard Langer to win his first Senior Open Championship this morning.

The action was halted in near darkness after two play-off holes at Royal Birkdale last night.

It took another three holes this morning — all five were played down the 18th — for Langer to trip up, bogeying as American Wiebe got down in two to find par.

It was the first time in the event’s 27-year history that it was concluded on a Monday and Wiebe, whose previous best Major result was tied 12th in the PGA Championship in 1989, was surprised by his success.

“I’m a little tired,” said the 55-year-old. “I was surprised that Bernie missed his putt because he’s a great putter. It just was my time.

“The course is unbelievably demanding — whether it’s a play-off or during the round.”
