Rory McIlroy insists he has no regrets about a topsy-turvy season describing it as “a year of exploration”.

The former world No1 returns to action at the DP World Tour Championship on Thursday bidding for a strong end to his 2021.

Despite his fluctuations throughout the season, including by his own admission a poor Ryder Cup showing, he reflected: “It’s been good. I feel like it’s been a year of exploration, learning. There have been some good parts.

“Obviously, the couple of wins in the States were nice. I was tied for the lead with nine holes to go at a Major championship at the US Open.

“There’s been some good stuff in there. I’ve worked hard. I’ve learned a few things and I feel like I sort of went through that barrier, struggled if you will and then I cam through the other side of it. It’s been an interesting year – I don’t regret any of it.”

McIlroy is out of contention in the Race to Dubai in 20th place for what is a six-way fight for the title between Collin Morikawa, Billy Horschel, Tyrrell Hatton, Min Woo Lee, Matt Fitzpatrick and Paul Casey.

The 32-year-old from Northern Ireland is in good form winning his only tournament since the Ryder Cup, the CJ Cup.

And he is a four-time winner at Jumeirah Golf Estates where the DP World Tour Championship takes place, with five more top-five finishes.

“It’s good to be here,” he said. “It’s a place I’ve had success in. It’s a course that suits my game really well. I’ll have a good chance this week. I don’t feel like I need to do anything too special to give myself a chance on Sunday.”
