Wimbledon 2013 draw: Andy Murray's escape as Roger Federer gets Rafael Nadal

24 June 2013

Andy Murray has avoided a possible Wimbledon quarter-final against Rafael Nadal but could play either the Spaniard or Roger Federer in the semi-finals.

The No2 seed had faced the possibility of coming up against Nadal, seeded fifth, in the last eight but the French Open champion will meet last year’s Wimbledon winner Federer.

Murray, though, still faces a tough route to the final with a prospective last-eight clash against Jo‑Wilfried Tsonga. World No1 Novak Djokovic is on the opposite side of the draw.

Murray opens his campaign on Monday against Benjamin Becker and will then face compatriot James Ward providing the world No216 also triumphs in the first round, where he meets Yen‑Hsun Lu, who is 74th in the rankings.

In the women’s draw, British No1 Laura Robson has been drawn against No10 seed Maria Kirilenko, while Heather Watson plays young American prospect Madison Keys.

Murray beat first round opponent Becker in straight sets last week when he played the German in the AEGON Championships at Queen's.

That is the only time the two have met. Becker is ranked 95 in the world and hails from Merzig.

The 32-year-old has won just one career title since turning professional in 2005 and has accrued around 25million US dollars (over £16million) less in winnings throughout his career.

If Murray's draw goes to form, he will meet Tsonga in the quarter-finals.

As they are in the bottom half of the draw, Murray, Federer and Nadal will all play their first-round matches on Monday.

In the women's singles defending champion Serena Williams was drawn against Luxembourg's Mandy Minella.

Third seed Maria Sharapova will take on Kristina Mladenovic in her first match while second seed Victoria Azarenka was pitted against 20-year-old Portuguese Maria Joao Koehler.

British number two Heather Watson received an easier draw after being pitted against America world number 53 Madison Keys.

Elena Baltacha will fancy her chances of overcoming Italy's Flavia Pennetta to make the second round, but Anne Keothavong has a tougher draw against world number 70 Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

British wildcards Tara Moore and Samantha Murray will play Kaia Kanepi and Camila Giorgi while Johanna Konta faces former US Open finalist Jelena Jankovic.
