Owen leads from the front

The England squad take time out from their Euro 2004 preparations

England were well up to speed with their Euro 2004 preparations here today.

After a training session in which the players' fitness levels were assessed, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and David James went to a nearby go-kart track.

Following a few laps at impressive speed, watched by anxious Football Association officials, the trio finished without mishap.

Liverpool striker Owen at one stage, called across to photographers: "Did you get that? I won!"

Six players were excused training today - the Manchester United quartet of Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt who were involved in the FA Cup Final plus captain David Beckham and Owen Hargreaves who were training with their European clubs up until last weekend.

Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell, who has a hamstring injury, did some light work with England physiotherapist Gary Lewin for the second day running but his fitness is still in some doubt.

Meanwhile, England's chances against France in their Euro 2004 clash received a boost today after their opponents were dealt a potentially massive injury blow to captain Marcel Desailly.

The Chelsea centre-back hurt his left knee against Brazil last Thursday and is a major doubt for the opening group match in Lisbon against England on 13 June.

Desailly has been receiving intensive treatment and has missed at least two training sessions to have treatment.

French insiders believe Desailly has only a 50 per cent chance of playing unless the problem responds well in the next few days.
