Pompey chase Anelka as Everton close in on Yakubu

13 April 2012

Harry Redknapp has turned his attention to French striker Nicolas Anelka after his plans to sign Yakubu were thwarted by Everton.

After spending miserly sums all summer, Goodison chairman Bill Kenwright is ready to splash out £22million before the end of the transfer window on Benfica midfielder Manuel Fernandes and Middlebrough's Yakubu.

Kenwright has told Boro chief executive Keith Lamb he will be back with an improved offer for the striker after an initial £10m approach was turned down.

The Evertonians' late approach means Portsmouth boss Redknapp is pessimistic about capturing the marksman who once starred for his club, so he will try to trigger a £9m release clause in Anelka's contract at Bolton.
