Quins suffer the Blues as Hewitt stars for Cardiff

13 April 2012

Cardiff Blues went clear at the top of Pool Three in the Heineken Cup with a comfortable victory over Harlequins at the Arms Park.

Tom Shanklin and Dafydd Hewitt went over in either half to send the Welsh region to the brink of the quarterfinals for the first time in seven years.

Hal Luscombe and Mike Brown scored for Quins but they rarely looked like ending their run of 10 games since their last win in the competition, against Bridgend in 2002.

With Andy Gomarsall and Nick Easter both injured, Quins lacked any cutting edge.

Cardiff led at the break, though their 10 points were a modest return after dominating the early exchanges.

Hewitt saw his third-minute touchdown ruled out for crossing, but after a first period of half-chances, the Cardiff centre scorched over two minutes before the break.

He raced on to a Martyn Williams pass after Chris Malone twice missed the chance to level following Ben Blair's early penalty.

Harlequins briefly hinted at a comeback when Wales wing Luscombe dived over on 50 minutes.

But Blair kept Cardiff out of reach with two more penalties before Shanklin was barrelled over nine minutes from time to seal the win.
