Ramos wants Champions League

12 April 2012

Juande Ramos admits he is missing the Champions League - and he is determined to get back there with Tottenham.

The Spurs head coach, who was in the competition with Sevilla earlier this season, watched the quarter-finals on television this week when Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United went through.

The Spaniard admitted: "It's strange when Wednesday comes around and you see these games happening. Yes, I miss it because I liked that competition a lot and I hope to be back soon."

He added: "I like the Champions League, I like teams of high competition. It would be nice for Tottenham to be there one day competing with them.

"It's what we are aiming to do, what we want to do is fight and compete in order to remove one of the teams in the top four and replace them. It's our obligation to do that."

Ramos has highlighted the investment needed for clubs to get into the Champions League.

"It comes down to budgets at the end of the day," he said. "Budgets have a lot to do with this. The four teams involved in the final stages of the Champions League have the highest budgets.

"Therefore they are able to buy the best star players, they have the best options to buy those players."

Winning the Carling Cup just four months after his arrival has raised expectations of Ramos getting Spurs into the top four of the Premier League.

"We need to buy the best players," he added. "Now and then there can be a team that can break into those four as a surprise but it's very difficult and it all comes down to budget."
