Ridsdale surprised by manager candidates

13 April 2012

Leeds United chairman Peter Ridsdale today revealed that the club had been forced to reassess the move to replace manager David O'Leary.

Ridsdale said: "The members of the board agreed on Sunday to take a couple of days to reflect on our discussions and make sure we'd made the right choice before proceeding.

"Since then I have been pleasantly surprised to have received at least three calls from candidates we had not even considered.

"The quality of some of these candidates is such that we did not think they would be remotely interested in the vacancy.

"I have been talking to board members again and we will continue to make sure we get the best possible candidate for the football club.

"All I can say is that we have not made any final decision yet and have not approached any club."

Celtic said that there has been no official approach for their manager Martin O'Neill.

Meanwhile, Leeds striker Robbie Keane has refused to move to Sunderland in a £10 million deal.

Leeds need the cash to offset massive debts but the Republic of Ireland World Cup star said: "I do not want to speak to any other club. I am happy at Leeds."

Keane, who struggled to make an impact at Elland Road under O'Leary, added: "I am confident that I can impress any new manager with my ability and commitment."
