Rivaldo says no to Newcastle

13 April 2012

Newcastle's hopes of signing Brazilian star Rivaldo have been dealt a blow by the Barcelona player's decision to stay at the Nou Camp.

The Magpies had been interested in signing the player who has one year left on his contract with the Spanish club.

But Rivaldo, who lines up for Brazil against England in the World Cup quarter-final in Shizuoka on Friday, will be up for hire to the highest bidder at the end of next season.

The Brazilian, who has struck four World Cup goals so far this summer, will be out of contract in 12 months.

He will then be able to negotiate a move away and collect a hefty signing-on fee, with Italian club Lazio expected to lead the bidding.

Rivaldo said: "I have one year left of my contract and I will continue in Barcelona.

"All this that is coming out in the newspapers and the television regarding my future does not interest me."
