Fully focused: Robson on the way to victory over Radwanska

One junior Wimbledon champion disposed of another on Thursday as Laura Robson produced an impressive performance to reach the last eight of the LTA £40,000 tournament in Shrewsbury.

Robson beat the player she succeeded as girls’ champion at the All England Club,
17-year-old Urszula Radwanska, 6-3, 6-3 in a hard-fought match.

In what is her first professional tournament in Britain, Robson overcame the highly-rated Pole, whose sister Agnieszka is the world No 10.

Urszula is ranked at 128, giving an indication of the level that 14-year-old Robson has already reached.

There was no quarter given in a sometimes testy encounter between the two teenagers that saw the Londoner prevail after breaking her opponent five times in the course of a 109-minute victory.

She now faces the experienced Israeli, 35-year-old Tzipora Obziler, who is ranked 123 in the world but has been as high as 75.

‘I was pleased with my performance,’ said Robson. ‘Radwanska is a tough player and I knew I’d have to play a good match to win.’
