Rocky Fielding to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at Madison Square Garden in December
Great Britain’s Rocky Fielding will challenge boxing superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in New York on 15 December.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn wrote “dreams do come true” as he made the shock announcement on Instagram.
Fielding, 31, will defend the WBA regular super-middleweight title he won in July earlier this year against Canelo at one of boxing’s most celebrated venues in Madison Square Garden.
Canelo moves up a weight division having becoming the unified middleweight champion after his majority decision victory over Gennady Golovkin in September.
The Mexican enhanced his reputation as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters with his somewhat controversial victory over ‘Triple G’.
Canelo moving up in weight opens up the possibility of a meeting with another Liverpudlian in Callum Smith in the future.
Smith took the full version of the WBA super-middleweight championship after knocking out George Groves in the seventh round of the World Boxing Super Series in September.
Canelo, who has just one professional defeat in 52 fights, has previously fought Callum’s older brother Liam Smith, stopping ‘Beefy’ in nine rounds in 2016.
