One of Cristiano Ronaldo's closest friends claims that the Manchester United winger has told him he wants to sign for Real Madrid.

Portugal and Real defender Pepe insists that his fellow countryman is eager to make the move to the Bernabeu and would become an instant hero in the Spanish capital.

According to The Sun, Pepe said: It’s normal he wants to come. If he comes to Madrid he’ll be welcomed by everyone.

'The directors, players and fans welcome you here — Cristiano won’t have a problem.

'He has said many times that he likes Madrid. He knows the great history of Madrid and the club that it is.'

Pepe is believed to have kept Real officials updated on Ronaldo's thoughts throughout Euro 2008, and president Ramon Calderon is still hoping the winger can pressure United into letting him go.

Calderon said: 'We are just spectators. It is the player and the club who are talking about the problem. They have to talk and we are waiting.'
