An excellent putting display at the Memorial tournament helped Rory McIlroy finish fifth and left him feeling full of confidence for the US Open.

The Northern Irishman closed with a 68 at Muirfield Village to leave him 11 under par overall, five shots behind the winner, American Steve Stricker.

McIlroy, who averaged 26.65 putts per round, said: "I putted really well this week and that's a huge positive to take into the US Open next week."
