Martin Offiah: Don’t rule out the Broncos winning Cup

8 July 2013

At times, it felt like I was watching as much tennis as rugby league over the weekend.

And for me, the Andy Murray of the Super League were Wigan. They’d had two tough defeats to deal with and it looked like defeat No3 was on the cards before an excellent comeback against Bradford Bulls.

But in the final 20 minutes, they ripped the Bulls apart to score a last-minute try and win that game, giving them all the confidence going in to this weekend’s Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

The London Broncos may have lost but they would have taken a lot of confidence for their own quarter-final with their second-half display against Catalan Dragons. Tony Rea has very clearly thrown all his eggs in one basket now with the Cup in mind and you’d fancy them to beat Sheffield Eagles.

The competition does funny things and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that they could win it, which would be an amazing boost for the team. No one thought a few years ago that Murray could win Wimbledon, did they?

And looking at the bigger picture, hopefully it’s an omen and that a British side — albeit England — can have the same success when it comes to the next big global sporting event on these shores, the Rugby World Cup.

Player of the week

Michael Dobson — he was the key as Hull KR overturned a 12-point deficit to beat Salford City Reds.

Team of the week

It has to be Wigan. They looked dead and buried against the Bulls but had a brilliant turnaround.

Pick of this weekend

The best of the Challenge Cup quarter-finals is Warrington against Huddersfield. You’d have to say that next Sunday’s clash is a proper 50-50 game, almost impossible to call which way it’ll go.
