Eddie Jones: England fans must keep faith ahead of World Cup - I’ve done a reasonable job

Eddie Jones remains convinced England will peak in time for next year’s World Cup and has urged fans to keep faith.

England lost to Grand Slam winners France in Paris on Saturday night to round off a disappointing Six Nations, which saw them win two just of their five matches.

Jones is now likely to come under pressure after that performance, which comes off the back of England finishing fifth in last year’s Championship.

The Australian, however, insists England can still hit their peak when they return to France for next year’s World Cup and has told fans to keep believing in him and the players.

“They’ve got to have some faith. I think I’ve done a reasonable job for England for the past seven years,” said Jones.

“We’re going through a period now where we’re rebuilding the team and it takes time. Look at the French team, it took them three years to win the Championship.

“We’ve rebuilt the side from the last Six Nations. I think the progress is very positive. The results aren’t the results we’d like – we’d all like to be winning tournaments and be at the top of the table, but we’re not quite good enough to do that now.

“But within the next 12 to 14 months when we prepare for the World Cup, we will be.”

England blooded a number of young players during the Six Nations and Jones says he is excited for what the future could bring.

“The development of the team I think is going in the right direction, a number of good young players coming through,” he said.

“The amount that the players have learned during the tournament is immense and I have never been so excited about the development of the team.

“Am I pleased with the job I’m doing? I’m not pleased with the results. Do I think I’m coaching well? 100 per cent.

“I think I’m coaching well and sometimes you don’t get the results. I’ve coached for long enough to know this is all about rebuilding a team.

“I think we’ve got 11 Tests before the World Cup and if you look at that, it means guys like Freddie [Steward] and Marcus [Smith] and Harry Randall are going to increase their Test experience by 100 per cent in that period.

“There is a great learning experience for them. I think the timing for our team going into the World Cup is very good.”
