It’s the weather to assemble the pool and light the barbie

This weather reminds me of playing in South Africa in 30C on very hard grounds, so I am particularly looking forward to this weekend when I will attempt — with the aid of the instructions — to assemble a new swimming pool for our 15-month-old son Christian.

My wife Colinda works during the week and so has not been able to enjoy the lovely weather and that makes the weekends even more important for us. I am sure she will enjoy my attempts at inflating the pool!

The last couple of weekends have been particularly memorable with the weddings of Hayden Smith — our former lock who is now playing American Football in New York — and centre Nils Mordt.

But this one is going to be a bit more normal with plenty of time spent together as a family at our home in Harpenden.

We have a great family atmosphere at Sarries and get together regularly with other families at the weekend for a braai, which is a South African barbecue.

A few of us make our own boerewors, a South African sausage, every other month and it’s becoming quite competitive.

Some of the guys like Justin Melck prefer thicker wors while others insist it should be thinner. Neil de Kock is very much at the forefront when it comes to the recipe and the production of the wors. It becomes a bit of an art form.

On Sunday we will take Christian to a farm and introduce him to some animals and it’s going to be great to see how he reacts. He’s now walking but started while I was away with the Barbarians — I couldn’t believe his timing.

He isn’t side-stepping out of choice yet, but does make a similar move before going down!

I have received big-money offers from other European clubs in the past, but money can’t buy you happiness — and my family and I are happy at Saracens.

Let’s just hope this wonderful weather continues for more perfect weekends.
