Lewis Moody’s cool look is a lesson for England

10 April 2012

England captain Lewis Moody today ordered his players to "keep their cool" against South Africa, having learned his own lessons about the need to stay in control.

The 32-year-old is the only England player to be sent off at Twickenham, earning his marching orders in 2005 after fighting with Samoa wing Alesana Tuilagi.

Moody returns there tomorrow leading a team featuring a number of players, who are relatively inexperienced at Test level, against a very physical Springboks side.

The flanker said: "Our disciplinary record has been very good and it is critical we keep our cool tomorrow because we have young and enthusiastic players and they have to keep that in check.

"I had disciplinary issues in the past with my own temperament and it is no use if you let that go too far."

Having beaten Australia and Samoa, England are going for a hat‑trick of wins while South Africa are looking to recover from their defeat to Scotland.

Moody said: "There is a bit of angst and nervous energy in the air and it is similar to the period before we beat Australia. The Springboks have beaten Ireland and Wales on this tour without a lot of their big names but when they pull on that jersey they also pull on a lot of passion and commitment. They are a very proud race and will be fired up and we know this match is going to be incredibly difficult.

"They are huge men and will have seen the problems Samoa caused us at the break down and will use a similar area of attack."
