Martin Johnson’s relief at England victory

10 April 2012

England had to rely on five penalties to register an unconvincing first tour win as they beat the Australian Barbarians 15-9 in Gosford today.

Martin Johnson's side drew 28-28 with the Barbarians in Perth a week ago before losing 27-17 to Australia in the First Test.

England have yet to shine on this tour but Johnson was just relieved his men had come out on top.

"We have won in Australia," he said. "Our second string have played their second-string twice and have got a draw and a win. Am I saying it was fantastic and great? No. Ultimately in games like this you have to find a way to win and we did that."

England's senior players remained at the hotel in Sydney but Johnson believes the victory can give them a boost before Saturday's Second Test.

The team manager added: "You can't fake winning."

Charlie Hodgson kicked two penalties to give England the lead before three from Berrick Barnes put the hosts ahead. Olly Barkley took over kicking duties and three penalties sealed victory.
