Richie McCaw demands a rapid response

10 April 2012

New Zealand captain Richie McCaw is demanding an immediate backlash against England on Saturday after his side's run of 15 Test wins ended with a 26-24 defeat to Australia.

The All Blacks were 24-12 up with an hour gone but Dan Carter, on his return to action after ankle surgery, was taken off only for Australia to roar back with James O'Connor's injury-time try and conversion settling matters.

To add to the All Blacks' problems wing Cory Jane is out of the Twickenham match after injuring his rib during the Bledisloe Cup loss in Hong Kong on Saturday.

"I guess the character of the team is how you get back on the horse," said McCaw. "We've got a big Test match coming up that we need to make sure we prepare well for and take the lessons out of this game. If you're a quality team, you've got to be able to do that."

Having not played since August, Carter agreed at half-time with management that he would come off after 20 more minutes' play.

But the fly-half admitted: "Looking back I felt pretty good out there and I was probably a little bit selfish [in coming off]. I probably could have played the full 80."
