Tom Rees's knockout theory helps Wasps fight for honours

Charged up: Wasps flanker Tom Rees
10 April 2012

Tom Rees leads London Wasps against Gloucester in the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final on Sunday confident his men can land a spectacular double this season.

With the flanker now two games into his comeback from a double shoulder operation, London's most successful club believe they can land more silverware in the Cup and Guinness Premiership, where they are fourth.

Rees is the natural alternative to Steve Borthwick as England captain but despite his fine form he is playing down a Test recall for the summer tour of Australia and, instead, focusing on Wasps' bid for glory.

He said: "I had been out of the side for so long any sort of performance would have brought some attention but I am not up to speed.

"However, that will be sorted out in the coming weeks and I cannot afford to think of the summer and what England are doing because my focus is solely on Wasps — starting with this huge game at home to Gloucester. There are not that many games left in the season and whenever it ends then I will see what happens.

"We have a proud European record and while some of the big names who were part of the Heineken Cup triumphs are no longer here, there are a number of guys — like myself — who are a link with those wins and that is important.

"Our mind set until the end of the season is that every time we take the pitch it is a knockout game and we need to win to keep our season going."

Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter has named Derick Hougaard and Justin Marshall as the half-back for tonight's Premiership clash at Sale while Matias Aguero replaces prop Rhys Gill, who misses out with a chest injury.

Harlequins, with Nick Easter back from a damaged ankle, are home to Leeds tomorrow while London Irish travel to relegation favourites Worcester needing to win to regain a top-four place.
