Brad Barritt is adamant the battle for Lions places will not interfere with England attempt to win the Grand Slam against Wales in Cardiff.

The centre’s defensive excellence makes him a leading candidate for the Lions in Australia this summer and Saturday’s midfield battle — he partners Manu Tuilagi against Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies — could have a major impact on who makes the tour.

But Barritt said: “I don’t think any player needs more motivation than a Grand Slam decider and the Lions is too far in the future.

“It’s premature to think about the tour and it’s all about winning a Grand Slam.”

Barritt believes England lacked precision against Italy last Sunday while registering an 18-11 win. They failed to score a try and now face a Welsh side with a fearsome defensive reputation.

“There wasn’t a lack of ambition by England, it was a case of lack of precision that was the stumbling block,” said the Saracens centre.

“We can correct what happened against Italy this weekend in Cardiff by being more precise.

“It is a fine line and revolves around composure, a key element because Wales like to squeeze you. You have to show more patience in attack to do the right things at the right time. Wales like to have their guys on their feet at all times in defence and that makes them difficult to break down.”
