Ryder Cup beckons as Rory McIlroy looks to the States

Twin ambition: Ryder Cup certainty Rory McIlroy is to play more on US Tour

Europe's golf bosses are planning well ahead, with today's announcement that the 2014 Ryder Cup will take place at Gleneagles from September 26-28.

The event is expected to boost the Scottish economy by up to £100million, with Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games the same summer.

It will be only the second time the Ryder Cup has been played in Scotland. The 1973 clash with the Americans was held at Muirfield.

Concerns about adverse weather persuaded officials to book an earlier date for 2014. When Europe won at Celtic Manor in south Wales in October last year, heavy rain forced the tournament into a fourth day for the first time in its history.

Before their date in Perthshire, Europe, captained by Jose Maria Olazabal, will defend the Ryder Cup next September at the Medinah Country Club near Chicago.

In the meantime, Northern Ireland's world No2 Rory McIlroy, a certainty for Olazabal's team, intends to spend more time competing on the US Tour next year.

McIlroy, who is playing in the Hong Kong Open this week, said today: "I will add on a couple more events to my schedule in America.

"It won't be a drastic change and it certainly doesn't mean I'm going to neglect Europe. I will continue to play on the European Tour like I did this year."

McIlroy, the reigning US Open champion, pointed to his Ryder Cup team-mate, world No1 Luke Donald, as an example of someone who has successfully played both sides of the Atlantic.

"Luke has proved this year that it can be done. He has played on both tours and he heads the money list on both."
