Sainz draws on experience

12 April 2012

Former world champion Carlos Sainz put all of his experience to good use as he won the second stage of the Dakar Rally which crossed from Portugal into Spain.

The Volkswagen driver took the short special stage on day two as the field moved from Portimao to Malaga in Spain. Sainz took the win by 29 seconds from fellow Spaniard Nani Roma in a Mitsubishi to move up to second in the overall rankings.

Sainz said: "There were many types of tracks and so many levels of grip. At places, the wheels were spinning a lot and the road was narrow. It was a nice stage but not an easy one. Generally speaking, I enjoyed the Portuguese stages more than last year and we are happy with our results."
