Scottish FA consider joint bid for 2016 European Championship with Wales

13 April 2012

Welsh football chiefs admitted last night that talks have already taken place with their Scottish counterparts over a joint bid to host Euro 2016.

And David Collins, secretary of the Football Association of Wales, said the success of the tournament in Austria and Switzerland had only served to further encourage the Celtic nations.

Top venue: Swansea's Liberty Stadium

'The talks are tentative but we need to look at the 2009/10 bidding process with a possible bid for the 2016 event,' said Collins.

'With the infrastructure being built in Wales, we can certainly do it. Look at the size of Austria and Switzerland - they are not that different from Scotland and Wales.

'Wales will soon have three venues available (Millennium Stadium, Liberty Stadium and Cardiff City's new ground) so it's possible.

'I've been based over in Switzerland for Euro 2008 and everything has been exceptional.'

The SFA have already said they would step in to stage Euro 2012 if hosts Ukraine and Poland fail a progress inspection this summer.
