Shiv shines for West Indies

12 April 2012

Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit his 10th one-day international century to propel West Indies towards a competitive total after being dropped early in his innings during Sunday's second one-day international against England.

Guyana-born Chanderpaul returned to his roots to hit a superb 112 off 134 balls and guide his side out of trouble on 24 for two to reach 264 for eight despite apparently suffering from cramp during the later stages of his innings.

Chanderpaul hit 10 boundaries during his innings and shared in a crucial 133-run stand with Ramnaresh Sarwan after two early wickets from Jimmy Anderson had undermined West Indies' decision to bat first after winning the toss.

But England will regret being unable to dismiss Chanderpaul earlier after he was dropped by wicketkeeper Matt Prior on 27 standing up to the stumps to Dimitri Mascarenhas with West Indies on 80 for two.

Still buoyant from their unexpected success on Friday night, when West Indies coach John Dyson called his batsman off for bad light when they were still behind under the Duckworth Lewis method, England continued that momentum with Anderson removing openers Lendl Simmons and Chris Gayle inside the first six overs.

Lancashire seamer Anderson claimed the first breakthrough in the fourth over when Simmons edged behind and dismissed West Indies captain Gayle in his next over when he chopped onto his stumps attempting to guide to third man.

But those two early triumphs united Sarwan and Chanderpaul, West Indies' two most experienced players, at the crease and they combined in a brilliant, well-paced partnership.

The partnership was broken when Sarwan fell to the fourth ball of the batting power play when he chipped Anderson to Paul Collingwood at mid-off for a superb 74, but Chanderpaul continued the momentum and helped add 44 in those five overs of fielding restrictions.
