Simon Gerrans exit spells trouble for Bradley Wiggins

13 April 2012

Bradley Wiggins suffered a setback to his hopes of winning the Tour de France following the withdrawal of fellow Team Sky rider Simon Gerrans.

Australian Gerrans, who had been picked to help Wiggins in the mountain stages, broke his arm in a crash on Sunday. Wiggins struggled on the category one climb to Avoriaz, finishing one minute 45 seconds behind stage winner Andy Schleck.

The Brit is 14th, nearly three minutes behind leader Cadel Evans going into today's ninth stage to St Jaune-de-Maurienne, which features the famous 25km climb up Col de la Madeleine.
