Simon stuns Federer

Gilles Simon caused a major upset in the Tennis Masters Cup on Monday with victory over four-time champion Roger Federer.

The eighth seed, who was a late replacement for injured world number one Rafael Nadal in Shanghai, hit back from a set down to record a 4-6 6-4 6-3 success in the opening match of the Red Group.

World number nine Simon, who had beaten Federer in their only previous meeting at the Canada Masters earlier this year, fired down an ace to clinch victory after two hours and seven minutes on court.
