Skrtel faces anxious wait

13 April 2012

Martin Skrtel will discover tomorrow whether his season is over after a scan revealed cruciate ligament damage in his right knee.

The 23-year-old was given oxygen and left the field on a stretcher during Liverpool's 3-2 win over Manchester City after he fell awkwardly. A Liverpool spokesman said: "He will see a specialist tomorrow."

MIKE NEWELL was appointed manager of Grimsby today - his first job in football since being sacked by Luton 18 months ago.

The 43-year-old succeeds Alan Buckley, who was axed by the League Two club last month.

Newell's claims that he was offered bungs while at Luton led to a Football Association inquiry into corruption in the game.
