Smith: Too many Super League clubs

Warrington's former England coach Tony Smith has thrown his weight behind a growing campaign to reduce the number of teams in Super League.

A host of one-sided matches, many of them involving Warrington, have prompted calls for the top flight to be cut to 12, with Wolves hooker Michael Monaghan and Castleford coach Terry Matterson claiming there are not enough quality players to go around 14 teams.

"I'm not sure there is enough quality for 14," said Smith. "There's way too many matches that have shown that to be the case."

He added: "It's a matter of opinion but I think there should be significant reviews done each year to assess whether the current competition is the strongest it can be.

"We always do that when the England team doesn't quite come up to scratch and it has a big relationship as to why our national team probably doesn't do as well as it should because it reflects the strength of our competition."

The Wolves go into Saturday evening's game against Catalan Dragons in Perpignan needing just 26 more points to become the eighth team in the Super League era to hit the 1,000 mark in the regular season.

They topped the half-century for the ninth time with last Sunday's 66-12 rout of Wakefield and are averaging just over 40 points a game.

In Saturday other game, play-off hopefuls Castleford will be looking to end a three-match losing run against derby rivals Wakefield.
