Fencer beats NBA stars to lead role

Double Olympic champion fencer Mariel Zagunis will carry the flag for the US at the Opening Ceremony.

The 27-year-old, who won gold in the individual sabre in Athens and Beijing, topped a poll among the 529 US athletes, beating high-profile candidates including NBA stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

Zagunis said: “As an athlete, I can’t imagine a higher honour than to lead Team USA into the Olympic Games.”
