The Mayor referred to David Cameron as the “Politburo Prime Minister” in his speech before the cauldron was lit.

Speaking about pictures of himself and Mr Cameron “dad dancing” during the Olympics closing ceremony, he took the opportunity to jibe at the Premier.

The Mayor, who got a bigger ovation when he was introduced than Mr Cameron, said: “When the curtain came down on the Olympics and the Politburo Prime Minister and everybody had stopped gyrating to the Spice Girls there were people who came up to me and said they thought it was brilliant.

“[The Olympics] was... the antipasto to what is going to be a banquet of sport.” Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt was also in Trafalgar Square.

A City Hall spokesman today said Mr Johnson had intended to put “a comma” between the words “Politburo” and “Prime Minister” and had not intended to run them together during his speech.
