London 2012 Paralympics: Olympic rings swapped for Agitos symbol at Tower Bridge

24 August 2012

It was all change at Tower Bridge today as the Paralympic symbol Agitos moved in to replace the Olympic rings high above the Thames in London.

Agitos - from the Latin word agito, meaning I move - was featured at the Beijing Paralympics.

The three circling arcs represent Spirit in Motion - the Paralympics motto - and the red, blue and green colour scheme give a nod to national flags around the world.

Agitos symbolises the bringing together of Paralympians who inspire through their athleticism and strength of spirit.

The motto was introduced in 2004 at the Paralympic Games in Athens. The previous motto was Mind, Body, Spirit, introduced in 1994.

The old Paralympic symbol was taken from a tradition Korean decorative motif and was replaced by the International Paralympic Committee in 2003.
