On the record: Goldie Sayers

Sport: Athletics (javelin)

Record holder? Sayers broke her own British record in damp conditions at Crystal Palace at the weekend with an effort of 66.17m, which was enough to beat Olympic champion Barbora Spotakova and world No1 Sunette Viljoen.

Off the record: Sayers’s father Pete, who died in 2005, was a bluegrass musician.

Chance of an Olympic record? Sayers is now a strong contender for an Olympic medal despite the fact that she boasts only the seventh-furthest throw outdoors this season.
