Sven's tribute to Scholes

13 April 2012

Sven-Goran Eriksson today paid tribute to Paul Scholes after the Manchester United midfielder called time on his England career.

The 29-year-old won 36 of his 66 England caps under the Swede.

The England coach told www.TheFA.com: "I am very sorry that Paul has decided to retire from international football.

"Paul and I have been speaking about this since Euro 2004 and, while he remained a key part of my plans for the England team, I fully respect his decision."

Scholes scored 14 goals for England, the last of which came at Euro 2004 against Croatia.

Eriksson continued: "Paul is a great player who has given so much to England over the last seven years. He has a very special talent and it has been a privilege working so closely with him.

"I would like to wish Paul every success in the future with Manchester United. He deserves it."
