Andy Murray is set to play at the French Open, after it was announced he has been given a wildcard for the Geneva Open later this month.

The 36-year-old has been out of action since damaging ankle ligaments at the end of March, when he fell to an agonising defeat against Tomas Machac at the Miami Open.

There were fears that Murray’s participation at Wimbledon could be in doubt, however he opted against surgery and has made a successful recovery, and will now return before the end of the clay-court season.

He will be a wildcard at the tournament in Geneva, which begins on May 18, and the plan is to then head to Paris and prepare for Roland Garros. The second grand slam of the year gets underway on May 26.

It is expected to be Murray’s final appearance at the French Open, after the Briton confirmed he intends to retire later this summer. After a Wimbledon swansong, he still hopes to compete at the Olympics, which will be held at Roland Garros.

Murray has not played at the French Open since 2020, when he won just six games in a heavy first-round defeat to Stan Wawrinka. His last appearance before that was a run to the semi-finals in 2017.

The three-time grand slam champion is set to kick off his grass-court campaign at the Boss Open in Stuttgart, starting on June 10, before turning his attention to Queen's and then Wimbledon. Murray will not be defending the Challenger Tour titles he won in Surbiton and Nottingham last year.
