Andy Murray could be handed a lifeline for the French Open with a wildcard.

Murray, currently ranked 123rd in the world, is preparing to take part in qualifying for the second Grand Slam of the year from May 24 but tournament director Guy Forget said he was deserving of a place in the main draw.

Wildcards for the event from May 30 to June 13 have yet to be announced. And Forget said: “I know that Andy entered the qualifying, I know he’s practising right now in Rome, I saw him play some games and sets with Novak Djokovic.

“Andy is a great player, he sure deserves one [a wildcard]. It is a discussion we have to have with him and our team. We want to see him in good shape, I hope he feels well.

“He hasn’t played any matches yet, which is obviously what any player wants to do before committing to a big tournament especially when you are going to play the best-of-five sets.”

Murray has had limited game time this season. He last played a tournament in Rotterdam at the beginning of March and has not played a singles match on clay to date in 2021, though he is currently paired with Liam Broady in the doubles at the Italian Open.
