Broady battles into boys' final

Liam Broady is relishing the chance of becoming Britain's first boys' singles champion in almost 50 years after overcoming Australia's Jason Kubler 6-4, 6-3 in today's semi-final.

Stanley Matthews, son of the legendary footballer of the same name, won the title in 1962 and Broady can emulate him when he plays another Australian, Luke Saville in tomorrow's final.

Broady, 17, showed great maturity, to overcome the disappointment of having breaks of serve overturned in both sets to dispatch an opponent eight months his senior.

The Stockport starlet revealed the hard work he has done on improving his mental attitude, saying: "For a long time it has been a long focus of mine because it's like a forehand or backhand, it is something you have got to work on. I've done a lot better than most people would have thought getting here so I will just go out there and just try and do my best.

"If I bring my game out I will be able to do some damage. I've got a very good chance of winning the final if I play well."

Broady, whose sister Naomi lost in the first round of the ladies' singles this year, also admitted that he turned down Andy Murray's request to practise with him ahead of the British No1's clash with Rafael Nadal.

"Andy asked me to practise with him because I am a left hander like Rafa but I had to say no because of the importance of my own match."
