My early exit wasn’t due to a lack of effort, says Jamie Baker

People have a tendency to lump all the British players together, especially when it comes to Wimbledon, but each of us is responsible for our own results and all have our own stories to tell now that Andy Murray is the last remaining hope.

My own result was a straight-sets defeat and although world No79 Andreas Beck was ranked 174 places higher than me, it's disappointing because I felt I played pretty well and served about as well as I ever have. I just had one little blip in the second set on my serve and, against these higher-ranked players, that's enough.

I didn't lose because of any lack of effort, it's just that I don't play at this level week-in and week-out. The only way to improve and cope better in those situations is to get more exposure to playing against better opponents and it's my job to improve my ranking so I can do that.

This time last year, I was 1,000 in the world and it's remarkable that I'm even in a position to be playing here at all. I am very grateful to get my wild card but the biggest thank you I can give the All England Club is to improve my ranking so that I don't need a one next year.

Even when you do get your ranking high enough to play at this level, things still might not go your way in matches. Both Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha played well and then let a lead slip away, which is something that happens to all players.

From what I heard, Heather Watson was solid against a more experienced player in her first senior match at Wimbledon. Laura Robson went out there and played well against Jelena Jankovic and, like Heather, she's going to be a very good player.
