Sports Personality of the Year Andy Murray's rise from breakthrough star to world number one

Andy Murray scooped a third Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday to crown his best calendar year in tennis.

The Scot, who also celebrated becoming a father in February, won a second Wimbledon crown, took Olympic gold and climbed to the top of the world rankings in 2016.

Murray previously won the BBC prize in 2013 and 2015 and told Birmingham's Genting Arena he was really appreciative of the public's support after finishing ahead of Alistair Brownlee and Nick Skelton.

He added: "It's been a great year for British sport and I am so proud to have been a part of it."

Murray's unprecedented third SPOTY win follows claims he ranks highly - if not highest - among Britain's greatest ever individual sportsmen.

The 29-year-old from Dunblane, who has been tipped for a knighthood, reached tennis's summit despite the odds being stacked firmly against him.
