Terry hands McClaren fitness boost

12 April 2012

England captain John Terry provided a timely boost for Steve McClaren ahead of Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia by coming through a training session unscathed.

Terry was substituted during the 1-1 draw against Brazil on Friday night due to a tight hamstring but the Chelsea defender has suffered no lasting ill-effects.

Joe Cole, who picked up a slight knock against Brazil, also came through Monday's training session and will be ready for the must-win encounter in Tallinn.

Victory is the only option for England - Saturday's results in the other Euro 2008 qualifiers mean they trail Croatia by five points and both Israel and Russia by three in Group E.

Estonia may have failed to notch up a single point or even a goal but McClaren was present at the A Le Coq Arena in Tallinn to see Estonia lose by a single goal to Croatia, and saw them create the group leaders some substantial problems.

The suspension of Wayne Rooney and disappointing performance of Alan Smith up front against Brazil makes it very likely that McClaren will return to Peter Crouch to partner Michael Owen.

The towering Liverpool striker has scored five goals in six starts since McClaren took over and at international level has been especially prolific against football's smaller nations.
