UEFA give final to Swiss ref Massimo Busacca

Simon Johnson13 April 2012

UEFA have chosen Swiss referee Massimo Busacca to take charge of the Champions League Final.

European football's governing body are under pressure to make the right appointment following their disastrous selection of Tom Henning Ovrebo to take charge of Chelsea's highly-charged semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

In Busacca they have chosen an official with good experience, having taken charge of 32 Champions League ties so far, who can speak five languages, including English and Spanish.

The 40-year-old is no stranger to both sides either. He was the referee for the first leg of their semi-final last year which ended 0-0 in the Nou Camp in Barcelona.

United were awarded one penalty in the match, which Cristiano Ronaldo missed, but were upset they didn't get a second when the Portuguese star was fouled by Rafael Marquez.

Ferguson said afterwards: "I thought it was a penalty - the world and his wife would think that."
