Unsworth moves from Blades to Wigan

12 April 2012

Wigan manager Paul Jewell has completed his third signing of the transfer window with the capture of defender David Unsworth from Sheffield United.

Unsworth has completed a free transfer from the Blades where he has spent the last 18 months, although the experienced 33-year-old has recently been out of favour under boss Neil Warnock.

Unsworth's last appearance was in the 4-2 Carling Cup defeat to Birmingham in October after previously starting the first five matches of the Premiership season.

Unsworth started his career at Everton, spending five seasons at Goodison Park before joining West Ham.

After just one season with the Hammers, an aborted move to Aston Villa followed as he swiftly opted to return to Goodison Park for another six years.

There were then short spells at Portsmouth and Ipswich, the latter on loan, prior to linking up with the Blades with whom he made 40 appearances.

Unsworth joins fellow new boys in Sweden Under-21 international Andreas Granqvist and Norway international Kristofer Haestad at the JJB Stadium. Both are on loan until the end of the season from Helsingborg and IK Start respectively.
