Van der Gouw joins Hammers

13 April 2012

West Ham today signed Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw on a one-year contract.

The 38-year-old rejected an offer from Coventry City and Hammers goalkeeping coach Ludek Miklosko said: "He is a very experienced goalkeeper, which is important for us.

"That is what we need, as David James is the only other keeper with that experience we have, so it is great for the young goalkeepers who can learn from him. It is a brilliant signing."

The Dutchman joined United as second choice to Peter Schmeichel in 1996 and then, following the Dane's departure, filled a similar role after Fabian Barthez arrived at Old Trafford.
