Vettori suffers ankle injury

12 April 2012

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has emerged as a doubt for Tuesday's opening Twenty20 international against England after suffering an ankle injury in training.

The 29-year-old left-arm spinner, who only took over the captaincy from Stephen Fleming last year, is due to assemble with the rest of the Black Caps squad in Auckland on Saturday and will be assessed further on his arrival.

New Zealand's general manager Lindsay Crocker said: "A decision on his availability will be made next week."

Off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been called into New Zealand's squad as cover, while hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum will captain the side if Vettori fails to recover.
