Video: It's easy street for Layne in Maui

14 April 2012

Two surfers remained in contention for the 2006 ASP Women's World Tour title heading into the year's final event, the Billabong Pro in Maui - 18-year tour veteran Layne Beachley and her fellow Australian, the 2005 champion Chelsea Georgeson.

However, any spectators hoping for a tight battle between the two were to be left disappointed, as the 34-year-old Beachley was effectively handed the crown after Georgeson was ousted by compatriot Claire Bevilacqua at the quarter-final stage.

Beachley, though, was still in her element in the perfect two metre barrelling right-handers.

2006 has seen Beachley claw her way back into contention after Melanie Redman-Carr won the first three events of the year.

She completed victory at the Billabong Girls Pro in Brazil, followed by a second finals appearance at her own event, the Beachley Classic in Sydney.

And the 34-year-old secured an unprecedented seventh world title - her first since 2003 - as Redman-Carr, Georgeson and 2004 world champion Sofia Mulanovich all succumbed to pressure in the final events of the season.
