Wenger faces critical 12 days

14 April 2012

The Gunners embark on a 12-day spell at Fulham tonight that also takes in games against the old enemy Tottenham, a final Champions League group match against Porto and a meeting with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

Although Thierry Henry, who was overlooked for the European footballer of the year award this week, returns an uncomfortable trip to Craven Cottage, manager Wenger could be relying on an FA Cup run to save Arsenal's season by the time they play Chelsea on December 10.

The Arsenal chief, whose side are already 13 points behind Premiership pacesetters Manchester United, said: "The period that comes up now for us is the moment of truth.

"I want these players and this team to perform at their full potential. I think it's in there and it's down to me to get it out of them."

Although Wenger is sticking to principles that have secured three Premiership titles and four FA Cups in the last 10 years, Arsenal have fallen behind their rivals.

They did reach last season's Champions League Final, but progress in the Premiership has been achingly slow.

Wenger said: "We do not have any basic problem, apart from the fact we do not have enough points — and that is a big problem.

"There is no team beyond our reach in England. When you have quality, you always have a chance.

"Wait until the end of the season before you judge us."

Henry, who missed Saturday's defeat at Bolton with a shoulder injury, scored twice in last season's 4-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage and Arsenal will rely on their talisman to rediscover his touch in front of goal.
