Windies in control

12 April 2012

Daren Powell and Fidel Edwards ripped through the South African top order to put the West Indies in firm control of the first Test on Saturday.

After setting the Proteas 389 runs to win in Port Elizabeth, the Windies reduced the hosts to 45 for three at lunch on day four.

Powell set the ball rolling by trapping Herschelle Gibbs leg before wicket with the batsman failing to offer a shot. It was Gibbs' second duck of the match.

Edwards then got in on the act by claiming the wickets of Hashim Amla and South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

Amla got an outside edge to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin having made eight while Smith made just 11 before fending off a short delivery to Daren Ganga at short-leg.

Jacques Kallis (16 not out) and Ashwell Prince (10no) saw South Africa through to the interval without further damage but the Windies will be delighted with their morning's work.

Earlier, left-armer Paul Harris accounted for the two remaining West Indies wickets as the tourists, who held a 213-run first innings lead, were dismissed for 175 in their second knock.

They started day four on 146 for eight with Jerome Taylor and Powell at the crease.

Powell didn't last long, bowled by Harris for six, via an inside edge. Taylor contributed a feisty 22 from just 28 balls before he was caught at long-on by Andre Nel.

Harris' double saw him finish the innings with figures of four for 35.
