Mabel says she has no time for love because she is too busy with her career.

The singer, 22, whose latest single Don’t Call Me Up is about a break-up, said a relationship would be good to inspire her songwriting but might also be a distraction.

“I don’t actually have time. I am very much married to the job. I don’t have time for anything,” she said. “I love writing about love, so some time soon a new relationship would be great for some inspiration for the album. But there is no time to even meet people.

“I’m super focused right now on what it is that I want... and it [a relationship] is distracting. I also tend to go for the bad ones so I need to keep my head above water.”

Mabel, the daughter of Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey, also believes men might find her independent personality intimidating.

Asked whether she receives many messages asking for a date, she said: “I don’t actually get that many DMs. I tell myself that it’s because guys might be intimidated but I’m not that sure. I don’t know why?”

She added: “I’ve been single for a year and a half and that’s OK. I am a completely different person now to who I was a year and a half ago. I’m independent, I live by myself. I know the things that I can do that can make me happy. Now I know I love going to my gym — I have a whole list of things I love to do by myself without needing someone else to make me happy.”

Mabel, who toured with Harry Styles last year and released her debut single in 2015, is nominated for best British breakthrough act at the Brit Awards next Wednesday.
