Fans have been left “gutted” after missing out on tickets to this year’s BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Hull.

Some 50,000 tickets for the free festival were snapped up in under 50 minutes after going on sale at 9:10am on Monday morning.

Twenty-five thousand tickets were available for each day of the two-day event, which will play host to Katy Perry, Stormzy, Kings of Leon and Little Mix.

Fans expressed their disappointment on Twitter with some claiming they were nearly reduced to tears on missing out on a ticket.

One tweeted: “Words cannot describe how totally totally gutted I am that I didn't get tickets for the #bigweekend think I might actually cry.”

Another commented: “#BigWeekend words can not describe at how p***** off I am not being able to get any tickets.”

Others claimed they were kicked off of Ticketmaster while in a queue, with one posting: “The system for #bigweekend tickets was a joke... kicked off the website after 20 mins go back on and it was sold out #Fuming.”

But those who weren’t lucky enough to get tickets were told: “We do have a final few tickets to give away in on-air competitions on Radio 1 – keep listening for further details about these.”

DJ Scott Mills said recently that fans will not be disappointed by this year's line-up, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

"I have seen the full list of acts for Radio 1 Big Weekend this morning and there are names on there you won't believe," he told listeners on the Breakfast Show.

Big Weekend takes place at Burton Constable Hall on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May.
